§ 121. Mr. S. O. Daviesasked the Assistant Postmaster-General if he will cause an inquiry to be made into the circumstances under which a number of workmen were gassed recently while working in an atom bomb-proof tunnel in the London area; and if he can assure the House that this work is being directed and supervised by a competent mining engineer.
§ Mr. GammansI am glad to say that the men affected were not gassed. They were able to return to work the following day. An inquiry shows that the trouble was due to a pocket of air lacking sufficient oxygen. There was no trace of noxious gases. The work is being directed and supervised by one of the leading firms of consulting civil engineers in this country, who have had long experience in carrying out deep tunnelling work in London.
