HC Deb 13 March 1952 vol 497 cc148-9W
72. Mr. M. Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether his attention has been drawn to a recent accident in which a circus rider was killed on a "Wall of Death"; and whether he will introduce legislation to provide sufficient safeguards against unnecessary risk of life in the course of public entertainment.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

Legislation to provide for safeguards against the many different risks to which performers in circuses and other public entertainments voluntarily expose themselves would present great difficulties, and I doubt whether it is the most appropriate way of dealing with the matter. I am sure that the House will join with me in deprecating performances in which a real risk to human life is regarded as an attraction
