HC Deb 25 June 1952 vol 502 cc172-3W
52. Mr. Lewis

asked the Minister of Food what action his Department takes to prevent retailers building up stocks of subsidised foods on which subsidy is due to be removed and thus enabling them to sell at enhanced rates formerly subsidised commodities.

Major Lloyd George

For rationed foods, price changes coincide with ration periods and, as far as practicable, retailers and other distributors receive permits only for the amounts to which their customers are entitled within each ration period.

Of the subsidised unrationed foods, milk and bread are perishable and cannot be accumulated, and other measures can be taken to limit buying of flour before a price increase takes effect.
