HL Deb 10 June 1952 vol 177 cc33-4WA
LORD AMMON

asked Her Majesty's Government how many working days have been lost through industrial disputes during the years 1950 and 1951; what were the main causes of such disputes, and whether any figures can be given showing the loss to (a) the country, and (b) the workers.

LORD LLOYD

The approximate numbers of working days lost in stoppages arising from industrial disputes in 1950 and 1951 were 1,389,000 and 1,694,000, respectively. An account of the principal stoppages, together with an analysis of the causes of all these stoppages will be found in the annual reviews of industrial disputes in 1950 and 1951 published in the issues of theMinistry of Labour Gazette for May, 1951, and May, 1952. Information regarding the monetary loss caused to the country or to the workers by these stoppages is not available, but it is estimated that in each of those years the loss in man-days through these industrial stoppages represented about 0.03 per cent. of the possible number of working-days.

House adjourned at ten minutes past four o'clock.
