HL Deb 17 July 1952 vol 177 c1256WA
LORD METHUEN

asked Her Majesty's Government whether their attention has been drawn to the intention of the Corporation of Bristol to interfere with the fabric of the Lower Arcade, Broadmead, Bristol, in spite of this building having been listed in category grade 2 of the Town and Country Planning Act, 1947; and to ask Her Majesty's Government for an assurance that no such action will be permitted without proper inquiry.

THE LORD PRESIDENT OF THE COUNCIL (LORD WOOLTON)

Her Majesty's Government are aware that the Bristol Corporation intend to make certain minor alterations to the Lower Arcade. Originally the Corporation thought that it would be necessary to demolish this Arcade, in view of the major town improvements which they are carrying out in this area; but it is now agreed that with these minor alterations the Arcade can be kept and made part of the new shopping centre. In the circumstances, the Minister of Housing and Local Government has already signified that he will give his consent to the work.

House adjourned at nine minutes past three o'clock.
