HC Deb 28 February 1952 vol 496 cc208-9W
Mr. Peter Freeman

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he will take action to ensure that only humane methods are used in connection with the compulsory destruction of baboons in Gambia.

Mr. Lyttelton

The destruction of baboons in the Gambia is not compulsory, but is encouraged as part of the campaign to increase the amount of food available for the human population since the baboons do very considerable damage to the crops. I am assured that the destruction is carried out as humanely as possible.
