HL Deb 07 February 1952 vol 174 c1068WA
LORD HAWKE

asked Her Majesty's Government, whether they are satisfied that facilities will exist next winter for the slaughter and cure of the great increase in pig production which could result from the increased planting of fodder beet this year.

THE JOINT PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY, MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE AND FISHERIES (LORD CARRINGTON)

Facilities at bacon factories and Government slaughterhouses are adequate to deal with the numbers of pigs expected next winter. Any increase in the amount of fodder beet grown this year would not be ready for feeding to pigs until October. It could have little effect, therefore, on the numbers of pigs coming forward until the spring of 1953.

House adjourned at six o'clock, until 12noon to-morrow.
