116. Sir W. Smithers

asked the Minister of National Insurance how many people are employed full-time and part-time, respectively, by his Department including members of local tribunals; and what is the total cost per annum.

Mr. Peake

The staff employed by my Department on 1st January, 1952, was 32,954 full-time and 1,883 part-time officers. The cost of their salaries and wages shown in the estimates for 1951–52 was £14,328,000.

The local tribunals are served by 337 chairmen and reserve chairmen paid by fee, and by about 12,800 unpaid members who attend in rotation. The total cost of tribunals shown in the Estimates for 1951–52 was £86,000.
