HC Deb 04 December 1952 vol 508 c170W
83. Mr. K. Robinson

asked the Minister of Health whether he is now satisfied as to the value of cortisone and A.C.T.H. in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and allied complaints; and when he expects to make these preparations more widely available within the National Health Service.

Mr. Iain Macleod

During the time that these substances have been under trial in this country much valuable information has accumulated as to their uses and limitations, but I am advised that their place in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and allied conditions is not yet definitely determined. A decision as to the possible extension of their distribution will be made as soon as possible.

84. Mr. K. Robinson

asked the Minister of Health whether cortisone or A.C.T.H. is now being manufactured in this country; and what has been the total expenditure on imports of these two preparations in the last 12 months.

Mr. Iain Macleod

There is some British production of cortisone and A.C.T.H. The f.o.b. value of Government imports of cortisone during the 12 months ended 31st October, 1952, was 105,000; and of A.C.T.H., £111,428.
