HC Deb 02 December 1952 vol 508 c128W
19. Mr. Erroll

asked the Secretary of State for War why it is estimated that 722 persons will be employed in connection with War Department railways and inland water transport.

Mr. Head

The majority of these civilian employees are needed for duties under No. 1 Railway (Home) Group, which maintains and operates the railways in some 45 War Department depots, and at Cairnryan Military Port, which handles ammunition and explosives for the three Services. The remainder are employed at the Transportation Centre, R.E. and at the Headquarters Army Emergency Reserve (Transportation and Movement Control).
