§ Colonel Banksasked the President of the Board of Trade whether he has yet reached any decision about freeing domestic pottery from control.
Mr. P. ThorneyeroftYes. I have decided that it is no longer necessary to control the supply of decorated pottery for the home market, and I have made the necessary Order today.
This step has become possible because the output of pottery is adequate to meet demand and because this industry makes no call on scarce materials. The re-removal of the quota system, under which home market supplies have been limited, will, I believe, make the industry more flexible and better able to compete for export markets.
I am confident that there will be no diminution in the efforts of the industry to maintain and increase exports; the British Pottery Manufacturers Federation have given me assurances to this effect and have informed me that they intend to set up immediately a special committee, the duty of which will be to promote exports.
I have also decided that, as supplies of undecorated pottery are fully adequate, there is no need to maintain price control. I have accordingly made a second Order revoking this also.
Both Orders will come into effect on August 6th.
