HC Deb 29 November 1951 vol 494 cc165-6W
73. Mr. Mulley

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many new students have entered universities this term; how many are grant-aided; and what is the estimated total university population in England and Wales for the current academic year.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

The answer is as follows:

The following figures relate to universities and university colleges in England and Wales.

The number of full-time students admitted for the first time in October. 1951, was 18,616.

It is not known how many of these are grant-aided, but of the 69,322 full-time students in university institutions in the academic year 1950–51, 51,810 (about 75 per cent.) were assisted by awards, whether from public or private funds, providing wholly or in part for the payment of their fees and other expenses.

The number of full-time students enrolled in October, 1951, was 67,782 Usually, the number increases after October and it is expected that the total for this current academic year (1951–52) will rise by about 1¼ per cent. over the October figure.
