HC Deb 29 November 1951 vol 494 cc176-7W
104. Mr. Awbery

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government to what extent the increase in interest rates charged to local authorities will reflect itself in the weekly rents of council houses; and if he will raise the housing subsidy to the same extent as the interest charges to prevent the burden falling upon the tenants.

Mr. Marples

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given to the hon. Member for Newcastle-upon-Tyne, East (Mr. Blenkinsop), on 27th November.

105. Mr. Awbery

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government if he is aware that the increase in loan charges under the Small Dwellings Acquisition Act will discourage people from purchasing their own homes; and if he will take steps to see that this extra ½ per cent. is not placed on these special loans.

Mr. Marples

No. My right hon. Friend believes that loans under these Acts will still be made on sufficiently favourable terms to attract persons who want to buy their own homes.
