HC Deb 29 November 1951 vol 494 c163W
67. Mr. Philips Price

asked the Minister of Agriculture what steps his Department is taking to secure that the opportunity of hiring machinery to increase production shall be available for small farm occupiers who have not sufficient resources to own much machinery and whose holdings are not large enough to do other than hire machines.

Sir T. Dugdale

A Government machinery service is still being maintained, though on a greatly reduced scale, in 43 counties in England and Wales to assist small farm occupiers, usually by doing work for them on contract and in some cases also by hiring machinery. In those counties which are not now operating a machinery service the agricultural executive committees satisfied themselves that assistance for small farmers would be available by other means.
