HC Deb 29 November 1951 vol 494 c165W
70. Mr. Norman Smith

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer why he has directed that banks shall discontinue or abate the practice of allowing overdrafts in the cases of the holders of personal accounts who have deposited scrip or share certificates.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

My right hon. Friend has not, since he took office, given any fresh direction on the subject of bank advances. But the banks remain fully aware of the importance of discouraging, in the public interest, any advances which, like those mentioned by the hon. Member, may be inflationary in character.
