HC Deb 27 November 1951 vol 494 cc130-1W
92. Dr. Stross

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works as representing the Lord President of the Council, what research has been made on the problem of miners' emphysema; and what are the findings as to this condition being specific to mining as an occupation.

Mr. Molson

Research on industrial pulmonary diseases, including those associated with coalmining, forms a substantial part of the work of the Medical Research Council and is also in progress in a number of universities. Emphysema may occur in association with pneumoconiosis but there is no evidence that emphysema is in itself an occupational disease specific to mining.

93. Dr. Stross

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works, as representing the Lord President of the Council, whether the research work conducted in Cardiff by the pneumoconiosis research unit is to be published; and when a report may be expected.

Mr. Molson

The results of work carried out in the Pneumoconiosis Research Unit are published, as they become available, in scientific journals. Over twenty pages have so far been published and these are listed in the Medical Research Council's reports to Parliament. In addition the Council have themselves sponsored a publication entitled "Social Consequences of Pneumoconiosis among Coal Miners in South Wales" by C. M. Fletcher and P. Hugh-Jones. This publication is available from H.M. Stationery Office.
