HC Deb 21 November 1951 vol 494 c59W
Sir W. Darling

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland why Purchase Tax is charged on utility police uniforms.

Mr. J. Stuart

Police uniforms have to stand up to very hard wear in all weathers and retain a reasonably smart appearance. Utility materials are not suitable, and non-utility materials, on which Purchase Tax is payable, have had to be used.
