HC Deb 21 November 1951 vol 494 cc52-3W
89. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies, in view of the inadequacy of fire-fighting resources in Nigeria, what action is being taken to improve these; and whether responsibility for fire-fighting is being transferred to the Lagos and Port Harcourt town councils.

Mr. Lyttelton

Extensions to water supplies, as part of the ten-year development plan, should improve the fire-fighting resources in some towns with a pipe-borne supply. In the north some native authorities are to experiment with large mobile chemical fire extinguishers.

Responsibility for fire-fighting in Lagos and Port Harcourt is to be handed over to the respective town councils but I cannot yet give a date for the transfer.
