HC Deb 20 November 1951 vol 494 c23W
76. Mr. Crosland

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer upon what assumptions as regards the volume of exports and imports, the terms of trade, and net invisible earnings, respectively, his estimate of a United Kingdom balance of payments deficit of £500 million to £600 million for 1952 was based.

Mr. R. A. Butler

It is not the practice to give details of estimates for periods so far ahead. The estimate was based on market prices and trends and on import programmes prevailing shortly before I addressed the House on 7th November.
