HC Deb 13 November 1951 vol 493 cc36-8W
Captain Ryder

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he is aware that the awards for those disabled while serving in the police, prior to July, 1948, are considerably lower than the awards paid after that date under the Industrial Injuries Act; and whether he will take steps to remove this anomaly.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe:

I am aware that in some cases a policeman injured in the execution of his duty before the Industrial Injuries Scheme came into operation might have received larger aggregate benefits if that scheme had applied to him. It is, however, the general practice for benefits introduced as from a specified date to be payable only to persons whose entitlement to benefit arises on or after that date, and I can find no grounds for suggesting that the police should receive exceptionally favourable treatment in this respect.
