Mr. Odeyasked the Minister of Food whether, in view of the marked increase in the death rate in recent years from diseases of the heart and circulation, he will give instructions for the use of agenised flour to be discontinued; and whether he will arrange for flour to be matured in a natural manner by storage, without the use of chemicals such as chlorine dioxide, which are injurious, to public health.
§ Mr. F. WilleyI am advised that there is no evidence that the rise in the death rate from circulatory disease is related to the use of agene in flour or indeed that flour treated by present methods or with chlorine dioxide is harmful to man. The natural maturing of flour is a long and impracticable process.
