§ 88. Mr. J. Johnsonasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he will make a statement as to why the cost of an African student at Makerere College, Uganda, should be as high as £600 a year.
Mr. DugdaleThe annual expenditure of the university college per head of the student population is nearer £500 than £600, and this includes provision for research and other activities not directly connected with teaching. Expenses are bound, in any event, to be high in a new and rapidly expanding institution. Within the next two or three years the number of students should have more than doubled, and during that period the level of annual expenditure is not likely to increase significantly.
