HC Deb 03 May 1951 vol 487 c164W
Mr. Vaughan-Morgan

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what would be the cost of increasing the old age Income Tax allowance of one-fifth up to £500 to one-fourth in the case of incomes under £450.

Mr. Gaitskell

I presume the hon. Member has in mind that the increase in this allowance would apply to earned as well as unearned income. If so, the cost would be £5 million in a full year. If the increase were limited to unearned income the cost would be £1½ million.

Sir W. Darling

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the respective cost of collection of Income Tax per cent. of receipts of Schedules A, B, C, D and E, respectively.

Mr. Jay

I regret that this information is not available.
