HC Deb 21 March 1951 vol 485 cc289-90W
81. Mr. T. Reid

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he is aware that a sum of £2,000 has been donated by the Communist-controlled International Federation of Trade Unions to, and accepted by, a Nigerian trade union built up on British lines with the help and guidance of the Trades Union Congress; and if he will have this union de-registered.

Mr. J. Griffiths

I am aware of reports to this effect, but it is not possible to say definitely what transactions may have taken place or who may have been the actual recipients of any money that may have passed. In any event, Nigerian law does not provide for cancelling a union's registration on such grounds alone. There are of course other, and better, ways of countering Communist activity.
