§ 98. Mr. Brookasked the Minister of Labour if he will give the number of married women employed in the cotton and wool textile industries on the last date available in 1939, prior to the outbreak of war, and for a comparable date in 1950.
Mr. LeeStatistics of the numbers of married women in employment are not available, but estimates of the numbers of married women and widows in the various industries have been obtained from occasional sample analyses. Such analyses were made in 1937 and 1948 and the estimated numbers of married women and widows in the cotton and wool industries in Great Britain were 127,000 and 51,000 in the former year and 89,000 and 38,000 in the latter year. Corresponding figures from an analysis that was made in 1950 are not yet available.
