HC Deb 15 March 1951 vol 485 c194W
67. Brigadier Thorp

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how far canvassers' claims for the Register of Electors for 1951 have been met; and how long it will be before any outstanding claims are paid.

Mr. Jay

The responsibility for the payment of a canvasser's claim in connection with the preparation of the register of electors rests with the individual registration officer, who has the power under section 43 of the Representation of the People Act, 1949, to call upon his local authority to provide the necessary funds. I regret that I am, therefore, unable to give any information on the progress of the settlement of these claims.
