asked the Minister of Fuel and Power how many boys leaving school entered the mining industry in 1950; how many workers under 21 years of age entered the industry; and how many left, giving the figures for Britain as a whole and for North Staffordshire in particular.

The number of boys leaving school who entered the mining industry in 1950 was 8,453, of whom 136 were in North Staffordshire. In Great Britain 20,272 workers under 21 entered the mining industry in 1950 and 10,443 left. The corresponding figures for North Staffordshire were 481 and 381.
