HC Deb 08 March 1951 vol 485 cc87-8W
103. Mr. Chetwynd

asked the Minister of Education whether he will make a statement about the abolition of the system of four-year grants to students under the Training of Teachers Grant Regulations.

Mr. Tomlinson

The decision to abolish a system of four-year grants for intending teachers was announced in Circular 234, a copy of which I am sending to my hon. Friend. This step was recommended by the Working Party on University Awards and more recently by the National Advisory Council on the Training and Supply of Teachers, provided steps were taken to increase the provision of normal university awards. I have already increased the number of State scholarships and I am confident that I can rely on the good will and cooperation of local education authorities in maintaining a continued supply of students entering the teaching profession through the universities.
