HC Deb 07 March 1951 vol 485 c53W
Mr. J. Johnson

asked the Postmaster-General what steps he is taking to improve the capacity of the system of cables and wireless to Australia and the Far East.

Mr. Ness Edwards

I understand that arrangements are being made to provide for additional facilities at wireless relay points to increase traffic capacity and continuity of operation under difficult operating conditions. A wireless circuit has recently been opened between Singapore and Japan to improve the position in the Far East. Provision is also being made to renew certain cables in the Red Sea and, as a longer term plan, to recondition and restore to service a North Atlantic cable which will afford an additional outlet to Australia.
