HC Deb 07 March 1951 vol 485 c53W
16. Mr. T. Brown

asked the Postmaster-General the rate paid to State airlines per ton/mile for the carriage of mail; and how this compares with air freight rates and air passenger rates.

Mr. Ness Edwards

The latest complete comparison available is for the year 1949–50; during that year the average rate paid by the Post Office to the British Air Corporations for the carriage of first-class international mail was approximately 144d. per ton /mile. This was two and a half times the average passenger rate and more than four times the average freight rate.
