HC Deb 05 March 1951 vol 485 cc8-9W
73. Mrs. Braddock

asked the Minister of National Insurance if she is aware of the instruction issued to National Assistance offices, in areas where dockers have been on strike, that no assistance must be given to strikers' families; what arrangements were made with the Docks Labour Board; and if she will make a statement.

Mr. B. Taylor

The National Assistance Board inform me that no such instruction has been given: applications for assistance for the families of dockers during the recent dispute were dealt with in accordance with the regulations made under the National Assistance Act. The arrangements with the Docks Labour Board were made to ensure that in cases of necessity advances against wages would he paid at the earliest practicable date after the men had returned to work.
