§ Sir W. Smithersasked the Minister of Food to state in convenient categories the amount and value of meat, rabbits and other foodstuffs that were destroyed, or used for other purposes than human consumption, since January, 1950; and what was their value.
§ Mr. WebbThe amount of meat and rabbits destroyed or used for purposes other than human consumption during the first nine months of 1950 is as follows:
Meat Quantity (in tons) Approximate Cost Per cent, (by value) of Total Turnover £ Home killed 4,848 845,100 0.74 Frozen 327 34,200 0.03 Canned 272 51,800 0.34 Poultry 9 2,800 0.04 Rabbits 74 6,600 0.12 Note: Final figures are not at present available for the last three months of 1950. The range of other foodstuffs is so wide, including many handled by private traders, that it is not possible to give accurate and comprehensive figures. As far as commodities handled by the Ministry of Food are concerned, the total loss (after making allowance for money recovered by means of realisation and claims) was about £1,005,800, representing about 0.07 per cent. of the total annual turnover.
