HC Deb 21 June 1951 vol 489 cc86-7W
Lieut.-Colonel Bromley-Davenport

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty whether he is aware that the £25 grant towards uniforms issued to temporary midshipmen Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve is quite inadequate when these midshipmen are sent where tropical as well as ordinary uniform is required; that Purchase Tax has to be paid on the extra uniforms required; and whether, as these temporary midshipmen are doing compulsory National Service, he will ensure that they are not out of pocket as respects purchasing the necessary equipment.

Mr. Callaghan

The cash grant of £25 is intended to cover the cost to a midshipman R.N.V.R. of providing himself with one undress coat and one pair of blue trousers. An R.N.V.R. officer is not provided with tropical uniform until he is appointed, for the first time, to a station where such outfit is needed. He is then supplied with all such items from Service stocks without charge.
