HC Deb 04 June 1951 vol 488 cc70-1W
97. Mr. Peter Freeman

asked the Minister of Transport how many vehicles passed the cross-roads at the Clarence Bridge, Newport, at the latest known date; what was the corresponding number in 1939 and 1945; and what steps are being taken to relieve the congestion at this point.

Mr. Barnes

I regret I have no strictly comparable figures, but during a period of half-an-hour on Saturday, the 28th January, 1950, 910 vehicles (excluding bicycles) passed through these cross-roads, of which 619 went over the bridge. On a Saturday in August, 1948, 1,405 vehicles (excluding bicycles) went over the bridge in one hour; the number passing through the cross-roads is not recorded. I have no figures for 1939 or 1945. A system of one-way traffic working near this point has been tried experimentally and is now being made permanent in modified form. I regret that any scheme to give major relief would be too expensive to consider at the present time.
