HC Deb 04 June 1951 vol 488 cc77-8W
112. Mr. W. Taylor

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that showrooms and offices of gas and electricity undertakings are being renamed, "Service depots," with the express purpose of enabling such premises to qualify for derating under the Rating Acts; and if he will take steps to prevent this practice.

Mr. Jay

No. The renaming of showrooms and offices of gas and electricity undertakings as service depots would not have the effect the hon. Member suggests, as no premises of a gas undertaking qualify for derating and the British Electricity Authority make an annual lump sum payment in lieu of rates.
