§ VISCOUNT TEMPLEWOODasked His Majesty's Government what are the latest available figures for the strength and establishment of (a) the Metropolitan, (b) the provincial police, what has been the intake and wastage over the last six months, and how many new police houses, as compared with a similar period last year, are being built (a) in London, (b) in the provinces, by the police or local authorities.
THE LORD CHANCELLOROn May 31, 1951, the establishment of the Metropolitan Police Force was 19,716 men and 338 women. The actual strength was 15,575 men and 336 woman. The corresponding figures for the City of London and provincial forces were:754WA Establishment, 51,839 men and 1,387 women; strength, 44,971 men and 1,055 women. Intake and wastage over the past six months have been: Metropolitan Police intake, 375 men and 34 women; wastage, 700 men and 22 women. Other forces: intake, 1,507 men and 140 women: wastage, 1,924 men and 99 women.
Housing units under construction by police authorities on May 31, 1950 (including houses known to be under construction by local authorities for the police) were: Metropolitan Police area, 352; rest of England and Wales, 1,441. The corresponding figures as at May 31, 1951, are: Metropolitan Police area, 587;rest of England and Wales, 1,817.
