HC Deb 04 July 1951 vol 489 c225W
79. Mr. Parker

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty whether reconsideration can be given to King's Regulations and Admiralty Instructions, Article 1120, as this precludes free discharge, even on compassionate grounds, when the applicant and/or his family has any means to purchase his discharge.

Mr. Callaghan

The rules for discharge by purchase set out in columns 251 and 252 of the OFFICIAL REPORT for 17th March, 1948, have since been slightly relaxed. Where there is extreme hardship, the Admiralty may now remit the purchase money and yet pay any gratuity to which the man may be entitled.
