§ 94. Mr. Parkerasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what steps have been taken to implement the clause in the Italian Peace Treaty which makes Slovene and Italian the joint official languages in Zone A of the Free Territory of Trieste.
§ Mr. YoungerSince no Governor has been appointed for the Free Territory the Annex to the Peace Treaty which contains this clause has not come into force. On the other hand, the Peace Treaty lays down elsewhere that in the interim period existing laws shall remain valid unless and until they are revoked or suspended by the Governor. Thus Italian continues to be the sole official language in Zone A but special arrangements have been made by the Allied Military Government to meet the needs of the four communes where Slovene predominates.
