asked the Minister of Fuel and Power whether in view of the increase in prices, he will give an assurance that he will continue the transport subsidy on coal.

The coal freight subsidy was introduced as a special wartime measure to meet conditions which no longer obtain, and the Government have decided that it should be withdrawn in autumn, 1951, following progressive reductions during the year. The coal shipping trade has been informed accordingly.
