HL Deb 20 February 1951 vol 170 c444WA
THE MARQUESS OF ABERDEEN AND TEMAIR

asked His Majesty's Government: (1) Whether they are aware that cattle are being exported from Dublin to Canada, via Glasgow, for meat; (2) Whether representations can be made to the Government of Eire with a view to a greater proportion of meat being exported to Britain, so that the meat ration here may be increased.

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE DUCHY OF LANCASTER (VISCOUNT ALEXANDER OF HILLSBOROUGH)

It is understood that, exceptionally, a few cattle intended for meat were recently exported from Dublin to Canada via Glasgow.

Under the trade agreement, the Republic of Ireland already sends to the United Kingdom both some carcase meat and 90 per cent. of its export of live cattle. There has already been a notable expansion in recent years in the total numbers of cattle exported to this country, and there is at present little prospect of an increase being made in the percentage figure of 90 per cent.

House adjourned at a quarter before six o'clock.
