asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will list the countries of origin of the softwood imported in 1950, giving the amounts from each country; and whether he will also give the amount of homegrown timber produced in 1950.

Imports of softwood in total during 1950 amounted to 902,470 standards. Information regarding countries of origin is not available but I am sending my hon. Friend a statement showing the countries from which imports were consigned. The production of homegrown softwood during 1950 was 53,240 of standards; of mining timber, 176,950 standards; of home-grown hardwood 37,440,000 cubic feet; of sleepers, 722,000 cubic feet; and 10,665 poles were also produced.
