HC Deb 15 February 1951 vol 484 c81W
Mr. Kaberry

asked the Minister of Education how many pre-fabricated aluminium schools are now in course of erection; how many are planned for the present year; and if he intends to continue with this method of construction.

Mr. Tomlinson

I understand that 10 pre-fabricated aluminium schools are under construction, while 10 others are being erected partially in this form of construction. It is for local education authorities or other responsible bodies to decide the method of construction to be used for school buildings. I have therefore no comprehensive information about the extent to which aluminium will be used in the 1951–52 programme. In view of the shortage of building labour in many areas, I expect authorities will continue to use these components which often provide the only means of building urgently needed schools.
