HC Deb 15 February 1951 vol 484 cc82-3W
55. Mr. Joynson-Hicks

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he is aware that approximately 80 per cent. of the growers in this country were unable to make a profit last year; and what steps he is taking to protect their industry.

Mr. T. Williams

I am aware of the difficulties which horticulturists have experienced over the last year but I have no evidence on which to base an estimate of the proportion failing to make a profit. The National Farmers' Union has submitted an application for the revision of import duties on many horticultural products and this is receiving careful consideration. In the meantime imports of a wide range of fruits and vegetables are restricted during the main season of marketing of the home crops.
