HC Deb 04 December 1951 vol 494 cc243-4W
144. Mr. Awbery

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government to what extent he estimates that he will be able to increase the housing allocation for Bristol as a result of his decision to allow more houses to be built for sale; and what steps he proposes to take to ensure that those persons unable to purchase houses will not suffer as a result of a reduction in the number of houses available for letting.

Mr. H. Macmillan

The hon. Member has misinterpreted my decision. It goes no further than to leave the city council free, if they wish, to allow more houses to be built under licence, either for sale or for letting. Whether it will be desirable to increase their allocation for 1952 will depend on the progress they make in implementing it.

Mr. H. Macmillan

I would refer the hon. Member to the Appendix to Circular 73/51, a copy of which I am sending to him. It is for the local authority to assess the relative housing needs.
