HC Deb 03 December 1951 vol 494 cc186-7W
32. Captain Ryder

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power what additional fuel will be needed for the new power stations under construction or approved; and if this will be met from United Kingdom resources.

Mr. Geoffrey Lloyd

Sixteen million tons, but this modern plant will replace older plant which would otherwise consume 21 million tons to produce the same amount of electricity. It will be seen therefore that the need for coal does not depend on the building of new power stations but on the demand for electricity and we must certainly hope that the necessary home coal will be available.
