HC Deb 03 December 1951 vol 494 cc200-1W
103. Mr. T. Reid

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what was the value of gifts made or promised by Britain to her dependencies and mandated territories from 1919 to 1945 and from 1945 to date.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

Grants made by His Majesty's Government to British dependencies and mandated territories and expenditure incurred on their behalf from 1919 to 1945 totalled £161,010,000 approximately. The sums given or promised since 1945 amount to £254,598,000 approximately, of which £123,191,940 had been issued by 31st October, 1951.

The hon. Member is, of course, aware that during the war the Colonies gave to His Majesty's Government cash gifts alone amounting to £24,014,948.
