87. Lieut.-Colonel Bromley-Davenport

asked the Minister of Transport how many derailments and other accidents on railways have been brought to the notice of his chief inspecting officer during the past 12 months on the main line north from Euston, together with the total number of killed and wounded.

Mr. Maclay

During the 12 months to 19th November, 1951, I received statutory reports of 66 train accidents, including 27 derailments, on the main lines from Euston to Carlisle, Glasgow, Birmingham, Holyhead, Manchester and Liverpool. These 66 accidents included the serious derailment at Weedon on 21st September, 1951, in which 15 persons were killed and 50 injured, and another 10 accidents in which 30 persons were injured slightly.
