asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty what was the total number and total tonnage of His Majesty's ships in commission in the years 1913, 1938 and 1951, respectively.

The number and total tonnage of His Majesty's ships in commission in the years 1913, 1938 and 1951 were as follow:

1913–445 ships of 1.960,000 tons.

1938–233 ships of 890,000 tons.

1951–208 ships of 535,000 tons.

Coastal forces craft and supply, repair, maintenance and depot ships have been omitted in each case from these figures.
