HC Deb 26 April 1951 vol 487 c91W
73. Mr. Channon

asked the Minister of Education what steps are to be taken with regard to the teaching profession to implement the decision of His Majesty's Government that it is desirable to postpone the retirement of older people and to remove all obstacles which prevent those physically capable of continuing at work from doing so.

Mr. Tomlinson

Local education authorities were informed over 18 months ago that it was no longer necessary for them to obtain the approval of my Department to the continued employment of a teacher beyond the age of 65 as previously required by the Regulations. I am also examining the Teachers Superannuation Acts to see how far their provisions may tend to restrict the continued service of older teachers, and, if so, what amendments may be desirable.
