HC Deb 11 April 1951 vol 486 cc84-5W
99. Mr. Donner

asked the Secretary of State for Air whether, in view of the representations made to him on behalf of the 40,000 people living within three miles of Greenham Common, he will abandon the proposal to base a heavy bomber squadron there.

103. Mr. Hurd

asked the Secretary of State for Air if he has now been able to find a satisfactory alternative site for the heavy bomber airfield which it was pro posed to establish on Greenham and Crookham Commons close to the town of Newbury.

Mr. A. Henderson

I have re-examined this proposal in consultation with the other Ministers concerned in the light of the representations which have been made. We are satisfied that it is in the national interest that the airfield at Greenham Common should be taken back into use. In spite of an exhaustive examination no satisfactory alternative has been found.
